When female, the magical elder is demonized as a threatening witch. In early modern Europe, 1450-1750, official doctrine and policy from both church and state spread a horrific set of lies, equivalent to a conspiracy theory, claiming that women consorted with the devil and were evildoers. This lie led to state-sanctioned torture and murder of about 300,000 people, mostly women.  Misogynists regularly try to drum up hatred for women political figures by casting them as evil witches. Donald Trump frequently claims to be the victim of a “witch hunt,” but this is interpreted by his supporters in one T-shirt, in which his prosecutors are the feminized and despicable witches.
