During the 2016 campaign, Bernie Sanders was 74, Hillary Clinton was 68, and Donald Trump was 70. Ageist insults took aim only at Clinton, the youngest, with Clinton, as early as 2008 when she was 60, pictured as impossibly wrinkled, a “hag” suffering from exhaustion. Opponents do not focus on Trump’s advanced age, smearing him instead as an overgrown baby. Bernie Sanders, embraced by younger people, shows up favorably engaging in youthful pursuits. In 2020, the 74-year old Trump and his supporters mock Joe Biden, who is 77, as suffering from age-related exhaustion and forgetfulness.
